| In Nairobi 100,000 children are living in the street. Poorest of the poor, they survive on begging, garbage collection or prostitution.
Kuruka Maïsha is a school of art created in 2003 by two associations working with street kids. Contemporary and traditional dance, acrobatics, music and fine arts classes are given by professional artists. Art is used as a channel to express emotions, to improve the mental structure of the street kids and their acceptance of social rules.
For example, a rhythm is a structure and if you want to play with other people, you have to follow it and listen to the others. It is a fun and important first step in the acceptance of social rules. The children also improve their physical condition and stop their drug consumption through regular training in dance or acrobatic.
These youths also have something to say to the society, and by their performances they give a different and positive image of themselves. |
